Background: Pelvic trauma raises concern due to the high energy that is usually required to cause the injury, which makes it frequently associated with additional injuries, need for transfusion and prolonged rehabilitation. Particularly, isolated ischium fractures are quite uncommon, justifying the reporting of cases in order to contribute to continued medical learning.
Aim: To report a case of ischial fracture attended at our Service.
Method: This is the report of a single case attended at the Orthopedics Service of the Hospital Universitário São Francisco na Providência de Deus – HUSF, located in Bragança Paulista, SP, Brazil.
Case Report: The patient described presented exposed fractures in the ischium, as well as in the left ankle, after a car accident, with pain on palpation of the gluteal region and ankle. He also had limited hip, knee and ankle flexion. Due to the fracture line in the ischiopubic ramus associated with a previously suffered trauma, a percutaneous surgery was performed using a 7 mm cannulated screw to fix the affected area.
Conclusion: Ischium fractures are rare, are usually associated with trauma suffered by young athletes, and rarely occur in car accidents. Therefore, the case presented here contributes to the specialized literature on the subject, and describes a satisfactory procedure for surgical correction of this rare type of fracture.
