Background: Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) are frequent complications following surgical interventions, affecting patient comfort and recovery. With a prevalence of between 30% and 50%, these symptoms are particularly relevant in ophthalmic procedures, such as the correction of strabismus, due to the delicacy of ocular manipulation.
Aim: The aim of this study was to carry out an integrative literature review on the effectiveness of interventions to prevent PONV in patients undergoing strabismus surgery, in order to identify the most effective and safe approaches to optimize anesthetic care.
Method: The review was based on papers published in the last ten years, extracted from the PUBMED database. The search strategy used was as follows: postoperative[title] AND nausea[title] AND vomiting[title] AND strabismus[title]. The question that guided the research was: “what interventions are effective in preventing and managing PONV in strabismus surgeries, especially in pediatric populations?” The process followed six stages: formulation of the question, identification of the studies, data collection, critical analysis, discussion of the findings and drafting of the abstract.
Results: The search resulted in the selection of 10 papers, 9 of which met the established criteria.
Conclusion: The interventions analyzed, especially the combinations of antiemetics and fluid administration, proved to be effective in reducing the incidence of PONV. The importance of an evidence-based approach to improving postoperative recovery in children is highlighted, as well as the need for more rigorous research to improve clinical protocols.
