Background: Autoimmune/Inflammatory Syndrome Induced by Adjuvants (ASIA) is an emerging condition associated with components such as silicone in breast implants, which provokes a chronic inflammatory response and can trigger autoimmune diseases. Although the exact mechanisms of ASIA are still being investigated, the condition manifests itself with varied symptoms, such as chronic fatigue, arthralgias and neurological symptoms, making diagnosis and management difficult.
Aim: Through an integrative literature review, to evaluate the development of ASIA caused by silicone implants.
Method: This is an exploratory study based on the literature review method with evidence synthesis. The database chosen to select the papers was PUBMED, using the following search strategy: (asia[title] OR (autoimmune[title] OR inflammatory[title])) AND syndrome[title] AND silicon*[title]. Studies published in the last decade were evaluated, and any paper that discussed the proposed topic was initially included in the sample.
Results: Initially, 12 studies were identified which met the search strategy mentioned above. After reading the titles and abstracts, 2 papers were excluded because they did not discuss the proposed topic, leaving 10 studies that made up the final sample for the review.
Conclusion: The papers analyzed highlight that ASIA, especially in patients with silicone implants, is associated with a wide range of systemic and autoimmune symptoms, significantly impacting the quality of life of affected individuals. Evidence suggests a correlation between exposure to silicone and the development of autoimmune conditions, reinforcing the importance of including ASIA in the differential diagnosis in cases of non-specific symptoms. This reinforces the need for greater awareness and research to identify risk factors and effective management strategies.
