Background: Bariatric surgery is an effective approach for the treatment of morbid obesity and its comorbidities, promoting significant weight loss and improved quality of life by altering gastrointestinal anatomy and/or restricting dietary capacity. However, rapid weight loss can cause excess skin and sagging, generating physical discomfort and a negative impact on self-esteem. To mitigate these effects, body contouring surgery (BSC) stands out as a therapeutic option, combining techniques such as abdominoplasty, brachioplasty, thigh lift and mastopexy to restore skin tone and provide additional aesthetic and psychological benefits.
Aim: To review the literature on the functional and aesthetic results of SCC.
Method: This exploratory study was conducted using the integrative literature review method with a focus on synthesizing clinical evidence. The search was carried out in the PUBMED database, using the following search strategy: ((post[title] OR after[title]) AND bariatric[title]) AND (contour*[title] AND surger*[title]) AND skin AND results), with a time cut-off of five years.
Results: Initially, 10 studies were identified which met the previously established search strategy. After reading the titles and abstracts, no articles were excluded.
Conclusion: In general, the evidence presented reinforces the importance of BCC as an intervention that is not only aesthetic, but fundamental for improving the quality of life of post-bariatric patients. The studies analyzed showed that, despite the significant desire for BCC, barriers such as high cost and lack of reimbursement limit access to the procedure.
